Each stroke of pastel breathes life into the clouds, playing with light and shadow to convey the ethereal beauty of the skies. The absence of intricate ground details encourages the audience to immerse themselves in the sheer magnitude of the heavens.
Join me in exploring this artistic escape "Big Skies", where the big sky becomes more than a subject—it becomes a conduit for the release of emotions, a canvas for the expression of freedom, and a source of perpetual inspiration. Experience the magic of the open sky and let the nuances of each painting transport you to a world where the clouds tell stories, and the vastness above whispers secrets of the universe. --Jai Johnson

In my Big Sky series of pastel paintings, I invite you to explore the beauty of vast landscapes where the focus is on the expansive sky. My desire to emphasize the big sky over the ground stems from a fascination with the ever-changing and unique cloud formations which grace the celestial canvas. Focusing on the big sky is more than a creative decision; it's a personal escape—a visual retreat allowing me to transcend the boundaries of my surroundings. Each stroke on the paper becomes a deliberate act of liberation, a way to break free from the confines of a world increasingly filled with manmade structures and incessant noise.
The sky, with its ever-changing colors, shapes, and moods, serves as a constant wellspring of inspiration. It becomes my sanctuary, offering a sense of freedom transcending the physical constraints of the everyday. In the vastness above, I discover a limitless expanse where the chaotic urban landscape fades into insignificance, replaced by the serene beauty of clouds dancing in the open sky. I use soft pastels to capture the essence of these fleeting moments, from the warm hues of sunrise to the serene colors of sunset. By deliberately excluding detailed landscapes, I aim to draw attention to the limitless expanse above, allowing viewers to appreciate the dynamic play of colors, textures, and formations in the sky. |
